Drohobych, Ukraine, Honors Fallen Soldier Nazariy Kostyshyn, a Hero of the Nation

DROHOBYCH, Ukraine — On July 17, 2025, the small village of Mykhailevytsi in Ukraine’s Drohobych region was struck by grief as news spread of the death of Nazariy Kostyshyn, a 30-year-old soldier who gave his life defending his country against Russian aggression. The loss of this local hero, a skilled sapper and devoted son, has left the tight-knit community in mourning, yet proud of his unwavering courage.

Born on January 30, 1995, Nazariy grew up in Mykhailevytsi, a quiet village nestled in western Ukraine’s scenic Lviv region. A graduate of the local Mykhailevytsi school and Drohobych’s Vocational School No. 19, he pursued higher education with determination, earning a technician-programmer degree from Drohobych Mechanical-Technological College and later a computer science degree from Ternopil Economic University, according to local outlet DROBRO. Before the war, he worked at the Leoni factory, contributing to his community’s economic life.

Nazariy’s call to serve came early. After completing mandatory military service, he returned to civilian life, but when Russia launched its full-scale invasion in February 2022, he didn’t hesitate. Mobilized in March 2022, he joined the Ukrainian Armed Forces as a sapper in the 2nd Engineer Battalion (Unit A3817), where his technical skills and bravery shone on the front lines, defusing explosives and protecting his comrades.

Tragically, on July 17, 2025, while carrying out a combat mission to defend Ukraine, Nazariy was killed in action. His death leaves behind only his father, the sole surviving member of his immediate family, and a community grappling with profound loss. Yet, even in sorrow, Drohobych honors Nazariy’s sacrifice as a symbol of Ukraine’s unyielding spirit.
